Why should I buy a Home Theater PC (HTPC) instead of a generic desktop computer?

Home Theater PCs (HTPCs) are specifically designed to be used in conjunction with an HDTV and home theater setup. Careful component selection allows the NinX HTPC to have superior performance and yet be virtually silent and energy efficient. HDMI output allows you to easily connect both video and audio to your HDTV. All models have large capacity, ultra-quiet hard drives. 8 channel high-definition surround sound audio comes standard. Wireless N adapter provides smooth streaming Internet TV and movies. Stylish HTPC cases make your NinX Media PC look like another A/V component instead of a computer. Front-panel LCD display looks really cool and provides remote on/off and other functionality. Standard HTPC add-ons include Blu-Ray/DVD Combo Drive, TV Tuner, and 24-bit True Blu-Ray Sound Card.

Will my NinX Media PC have Surround Sound & Bit-Streaming Support?

Yes, all NinX systems include 7.1 surround sound audio, with several output choices. You can select analog sound output for powered computer speakers or headphones, a digital output (also called S/PDIF or toslink) for hooking it up to a TV or receiver without HDMI, or digital HDMI sound output. Windows 7 limits you to one sound output at a time.

How do I hook my NinX Media PC to a TV or Receiver?

Depends on your equipment. Here are some options:

  • Just a TV: Use the HDMI output for sound and video to your TV.
  • TV with a non-HDMI Receiver: Use the HDMI connection for your TV. Use the digital optical output (S/PDIF) to connect to your Receiver.
  • TV with HDMI Receiver: Connect the HDMI output to the receiver's HDMI input. Connect the Receiver's HDMI output to your TV.
  • No HDMI or digital input: Connect to your TV with the VGA or DVI output. Connect the analog audio output to your TV or Receiver.

Can I use a remote to control my NinX Media PC?

Yes. All of our systems have an IR receiver built into the case, which can be used in conjunction with any Media Center compatible remote. In addition, if you purchase a TV Tuner add-on, we include a Media Center compatible remote (MCE) or you can add one to your shopping cart from our website.

Can I watch/record live TV with my NinX Media PC? Can I get rid of my Set-Top Box?

Yes, but there are some caveats.

If you have Cable service you have 3 options:

  • Option #1: Add a TV Tuner (dual or single) to your order, connect the coax directly into your computer, and eliminate the cable box. You will be able to tune (watch, record, schedule, change channels) analog cable, over-the-air HD (ATSC), and Clear QAM digital cable, but channel selection may differ from your set-top box.
  • Option #2: Add a TV Tuner (dual or single) to your order, connect the SVideo from the cable box directly into your computer, and use the cable box for tuning. This allows you to "capture" programming from your provider.
  • Option #3: Keep using your cable box & DVR and don't purchase a TV Tuner. Get a switch to toggle between your HTPC and your live TV. A good way to do this is with an HDMI switch.

If you have Satellite/Dish service you have 2 options:

  • Option #1: Add a TV Tuner to your order, connect the SVideo from the satellite box directly into your computer, and use the satellite box for tuning. This allows you to "capture" programming from your provider.
    • Option #2: Keep using your satellite box & DVR and don't purchase a TV Tuner. Get a switch to toggle between your HTPC and your live TV. A good way to do this is with an HDMI switch.

Do I need a Dual Channel TV Tuner?

If you want to watch TV on one channel while recording on another or if you want to watch or record two different channels concurrently then you will want a Dual Channel TV Tuner. Otherwise, our Single Channel TV Tuner will suffice (i.e. you can watch/record one channel at a time).

Can I eliminate my Cable or Satellite service and still watch live TV on my PC?

Yes, you can do this with a TV Tuner via Over-The-Air tuning. Of course, your channel selection will be limited to local broadcasts.

What if I want a CableCard Tuner so I can watch/record premium channels on my PC?

We offer the ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner as a single tuner solution. A quad tuner solution by Ceton will be available late in March/April 2010. Contact us for more information about our CableCard solutions.

Do I need a keyboard and mouse?

If you plan to only use Windows Media Center, you can get by with only a remote. However, we recommend getting a wireless keyboard with integrated touch pad or trackball to make internet usage more convenient. You can add a wireless keyboard to your order from our website.

Can I use a single HTPC to stream audio/video to other HDTV's throughout my house?

Unfortunately, the technology is not yet available to reliably do this. You can share movies, pictures, music, etc between your networked NinX Media PCs but you must connect a separate computer to each HDTV. A viable alternative is to use an xBox 360 as a media center extender.

Can I customize my NinX Media PC?

Yes, just send us an email and we can put together a custom spec for you based on one of our standard models.

What software comes pre-installed with my NinX Media PC?

We pre-install Windows 7, Media Center plug-ins, and hardware drivers. If you choose the Blu-Ray upgrade, we also pre-install the Arcsoft software. We do not install any additional "junk" software that you find on most other computer systems.

Does NinX have a retail store location?

Nope. At this time we sell our products exclusively through our website.

What if I get stuck setting up my NinX Media PC?

No problem. We are here to help. Simply give us a call or send us an email and we will respond quickly (even on weekends) with expert assistance and advice. We can also send an in-home expert.
